Archipelago

Jonas Kocher returns to solo work with Archipelago, his third solo album, following Solo (2011) and Materials (2009). Across seven improvised pieces, Kocher explores the tension between control and unpredictability, between the organic and the mechanical. The result is a captivating music where precision meet raw physicality, and where each moment unfolds with striking immediacy.

Rich in contrasts and textures, Archipelago navigates through resonant chords, fragmented melodies, sharp attacks, harmonic progressions, electronic-like sonorities and hypnotic repetitions— presenting the accordion in a completely new and unexpected light.

Jonas Kocher is a virtuoso accordionist. His compositions are audacious, challenging, varied and full of energy. When listening to ‘Archipelago’, you can feel the uncompromising nature of his playing. Outstanding. radiohoerer

Kocher plays the accordion as an unpredictable sound generator with great precision and super-fast instincts. He weaves together elements as fragmented melodies, harmonic progressions, electronic-like sonorities, and hypnotic repetitions in a way that forces the attentive listener to rethink deep listening as a liberating act. Percorsi Musicali

You don’t just listen, you navigate, testing the currents, waiting for the next shore. And in a world where accordionists are too often sentenced to entertain in the background, Kocher insists on the opposite: here, the instrument sits front and center, uncompromising, elemental, slyly defiant. This is not music to sip wine to – it’s music that knocks the glass from your hand, then lets you hear the shards ring out on the floor. Chain D.L.K.
