Jacques Demierre is a pianist, composer, and improviser whose work spans acoustic and electroacoustic music, traditional composition and free improvisation, sound poetry, and site-specific sound interventions. Equally drawn to the evocative force of everyday noise and the expanded possibilities of the piano, he pursues a transversal, interdisciplinary vision of music — one that consistently pushes toward the territory of language.
He has collaborated extensively with poets, choreographers, and musicians from widely diverse backgrounds. Highlights include a long-standing duo with Vincent Barras in sound poetry, ongoing work with Chris Mann, Caroline Bergvall, L’Encyclopédie de la parole, and Christian Kesten, and interdisciplinary projects with choreographers Noemi Lapzeson, Cindy van Acker, and Foofwa d’Immobilité. As a pianist, he has performed with Barre Phillips, Urs Leimgruber, Thomas Lehn, Axel Dörner, Joëlle Léandre, Christian Marclay, Martial Solal, Irene Schweizer, and many others.
Co-founder of the Contrechamps Review and Editions with Philippe Albera and Vincent Barras, Demierre is the recipient of the 2007 Ville de Genève Music Award and the 2018 Swiss Music Prize.
