Ephemeralities

Ephemeralities is a performance that unfolds over time. Each realization is a singular experience, deeply transforming the perception of sound.

Working with composer Chiyoko Szlavnics, Hannes Lingens and Jonas Kocher developed playing techniques aimed at producing a sound that is still yet alive — conducive to beatings between (im)perfect unisons and to the perception of combination tones. Each bellows change alters the rhythm and texture of these events, or “sound scenarios”; each new pitch entirely reshapes the soundscape.

These “sound scenarios” — questioned and guided by Szlavnics’s sensitive outside ear over several years of work sessions — let listeners directly grasp psychoacoustic phenomena arising from the combined pitches of two equal-tempered accordions. Freed from contextual and historical implications, the music opens onto a renewed perception of sound itself.
